Nicknamed the “Gateway to the Rockies”, Loveland, CO was founded in 1877 along the newly-built line of the Colorado Central Railroad. It’s named after the president of the rail company. The first settlers arrived and settled upstream but later moved to Loveland.
In the first half of the 20th Century, Loveland developed an agricultural-based economy. Sugar beets and sour cherries were cultivated. The Great Western Sugar Company constructed a factory here in 1901, and it remained in operation till 1985.
Farmers also grew cherries and the Spring Glade Orchard became the largest orchard, producing over a million dollars’ worth of cherries in a year. Back-to-back droughts blight and extreme freeze sadly destroyed the industry.
The economy was diversified towards the end of the 20th Century with the construction of manufacturing facilities including Teledyne, Hewlett-Packard, and Hach. In the last decade, Loveland has expanded its incorporated limits, embracing the interchanges at Interstate 25.
